Pilot Study in USA shows osteo-arthritis is reversible MUMBAI New Line (The Indian EXPRESS) 19-Jun-2009
Arthritis, one of the most debilitating diseases of our time, has affected millions of people worldwide irrespective of age & gender. Nature being the most powerful healer has now given a new hope to the patients of arthritis. An edible shellfish, commonly known as Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) found off in the waters of New Zealand has shown in clinical trials to be effective in relieving the symptoms of arthritic related condition. This edible shellfish is a major diet of New Zealand Population & in the year 1947, an American research program studied the marine mollusk & discovered its natural recovery potentials for the treatment of arthritis.
According to a pilot study conducted in the U.S on Gonarthrosis (arthritis of the knee), a number of patients were significantly able to reduce their NSAID intake and pain medication dosage and maintain a more active lifestyle using a maintenance program of 100mg of GLM extract per day.
The study conducted by Roger V Kendall, PhD, John W. Hurley, MD and published in the “Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, 2000”. The GLM extract has shown to be especially in this clinical evaluation for Grade I and II Osteoarthritis, and comparatively less effective in Grade III Patients. The study suggests that osteoarthritis can be reversible. The very apparent and continued response of Grade I and II arthritis to the use of GLM extract shows that cartilage has the innate ability to regenerate itself. Arthroscopic & radiographic evidence on 10 patients strongly suggests that GLM extract contributed to new growth of cartilage.
Healtheries – a New Zealand based multinational natural healthcare company – has introduced the extract of GLM in the capsule form under the brand name of Seatone. Today, Seatone is been sold in over 30 countries & has benefited thousands of users worldwide. According to Dr. John croft, a marine scientist associated with the research on GLM, “Seatone GLME contains a rich blend of natural anti-inflammatory agents, immune modulators and many essential building blocks that help to maintain joint mobility, good health & wellbeing. The various clinical studies have indicated the success rate of 75% on Arthritis patients, without causing any classical adverse side effects of drug therapy”
In India, the cost for this therapy of 1000mg/day comes to Rs. 50/- per day first three months, which can be later reduce to 500mg/day that is Rs. 25/-per day.
